Say, "cheese!"

Ah, the holidays! Gatherings of family and friends. Pictures are sure to be taken to commemorate the occasion. And if you are ashamed of your smile, it's hard to smile. But there are many over the counter products that you can purchase to brighten and whiten your smile. Both Crest and Oral-B have over the counter whitening strips that will make your teeth whiter in a short time.

Many make over programs are suggesting that you put the strips on while you are getting ready for work, a date or a party. If you pick them up soon, your smile will rival any that shine on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

Cosmetic dentistry, like caps and whitening are not usually covered by your insurance company. However, if the procedure will save your teeth, your insurance will eventually approve the procedure as long as your dentist is diligent in presenting your case.

If you do not have dental insurance coverage, you could end up spending thousands of dollars out of pocket to keep your smile healthy. Also, if you have a budding family, the attention that you give to your children's teeth now will save them costly procedures in their adulthood.

Taking care of your teeth is a habit that you can encourage as part of your child's daily morning and night time rituals. Providing dental insurance for your family will not cost as much as procedures that you may need, like braces, root canals and crowns. For the best dental insurance rates, you can visit Dental Insurance Scout. You can be assured that your needs will be taken into consideration and the most cost effective option will be found to provide for your family's smiles. Visit the Dental Insurance Scout website for premium comparisons today.

On behalf of your local dentist, we hope that this holiday season brings many wonderful smiles to you.

Flossing your teeth

One of the most neglected dental care rituals is flossing after each meal. Certainly it isn't always convenient to floss your teeth after a meal, but most people do not floss their teeth at all. This accounts for a great many cavities between teeth. Untreated, cavities between teeth can weaken the entire tooth and make it susceptible to chipping or crumbling. You can avoid these dental problems by developing a proper dental care routine.

You should visit your dentist every six months for optimum tooth health. Of course that can be costly, but if you brush and floss your teeth daily, you will reduce the extreme measures that denists have to go to correct dental maladies like cavities. Once a cavity progresses, it can break through to the root of a tooth and become impacted, which will likely require a root canal. Isn't it comforting to know that you can avoid these extreme dental treatments by visiting your dentist regularly and brushing and flossing your teeth daily?

Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care in full; which means that your cleanings and floride treatments are covered under most dental insurance plans. You will find that as long as you take care of your teeth, that you won't require root canals and crowns or worse yet dentures.

Your smile was built to last your lifetime and your dentist can help you reach that goal.

Give Back a Smile program

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Meet Yasmine after enduring four years of physical, mental and verbal abuse, she decided to get herself away from her husband who battered her. The picture to the left is how she looked when she entered a Battered Woman's shelter, where she not only battled the shame of the abuse, but the shame that her chipped teeth brought her. Over the four year period, she lost her self esteem and her ability to see herself as a pretty woman with a beautiful smile was marred by the fact that following a punch by her husband to her mouth, her teeth were chipped.

Enter the American Academy of cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Give Back a Smile is a program that provides survivors of domestic violence free dental repair. The AACD's membership wanted to return something to the community while raising awareness of the effects of domestic violence.

If you or someone you know has suffered dental disease directly related to domestic violence, you can contact the AACD and apply for the program by calling 1-800-773-4227.

This is a picture of Yasmine today. As you can see she got her smile back and her life, too. After her dental repair, she continued to work on her self esteem issues and secured a good job. The AACD hopes that you will educate yourself about ways to recognize and prevent domestic violence.

If your smile is in need of repair, reconstruction or just general cleaning, you can secure dental insurance for you and your family by visiting
