October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Meet Yasmine after enduring four years of physical, mental and verbal abuse, she decided to get herself away from her husband who battered her. The picture to the left is how she looked when she entered a Battered Woman's shelter, where she not only battled the shame of the abuse, but the shame that her chipped teeth brought her. Over the four year period, she lost her self esteem and her ability to see herself as a pretty woman with a beautiful smile was marred by the fact that following a punch by her husband to her mouth, her teeth were chipped.

Enter the American Academy of cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Give Back a Smile is a program that provides survivors of domestic violence free dental repair. The AACD's membership wanted to return something to the community while raising awareness of the effects of domestic violence.
